A Little History

In 2015 when the center began as a small operation located in Bethany's basement. No one had any idea how large or how fast we would grow.

In 2022 we treated 755 animals and the size of the facility wasn't going to continue to support the rapid growth we were experiencing much longer.

In 2023 Saco Wildlife Center acquired 57 Christian Hill Rd in Limington Maine. This historic house was built in the late 1700s, sits on 18.22 acres of land and was itself a former sanctuary for wolves. It had been empty for some time and fallen into serious disrepair

Knowing the house needed a immense amount of rehabilitation we began that project in the spring of 2024 after several months of demolition and clean out. After more than a years work the first floor of the building was completed and ready for occupancy in August of 2025.

The second floor renovations are now complete.

Enclosures

The current plan is to build 15 enclosures:

  • 7 for Raccoons

  • 7 that can house multiple species

  • 1 for semi-aquatic species

We build our enclosures to incorporate the trees and rocks of the landscape rather than clearing land to make them more natural and enriching for our patients.

These enclosures are expensive to build, $2000 - $2500 each, but the value of providing our patients the best possible living conditions is immeasurable.  With 18 acres at our disposal, we will build as many as are needed to provide the standard of care we are dedicated to.

We still have 10 left to build and construction on them will restart in Spring of 2026. Here's how you can help.

The Project is Ongoing.

We still have one out building and a barn attached to the house that requires extensive renovation before the space becomes usable. â€‹These are expensive projects and we wouldn't be able to do it without your support.

Your support is crucial to the success of this project. By contributing to the fundraising efforts, you become a vital part of the Saco River Wildlife Center's commitment to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. Donors will not only be supporting the renovation process but will also have the opportunity to be recognized through various naming opportunities.

The Saco River Wildlife Center is offering naming opportunities for individuals or organizations that wish to leave a lasting impact on the new facility. This is a unique chance to be permanently associated with the center's dedication to wildlife well-being.
